We work on both sides of that question. Our NIH-funded studies test new approaches — medications, and digital programs delivered by phone or app — through rigorous clinical trials. And through Bradley Hospital, the nation's first psychiatric hospital exclusively for children and adolescents, we deliver care to teens and families in Rhode Island. Our clinical program is designated a model treatment program by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

That combination matters. As clinicians, we see the daily limits of the treatments currently available. As researchers, we can test better ones. Work moves from the clinic into our studies and back again.

Our research asks how alcohol and other drug problems develop in adolescence, which treatments work and for whom, and why some communities have far less access to care than others. We're based at Brown's Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies and the Warren Alpert Medical School, where we also train the clinicians and scientists who will take this work forward.
